THE GUESTS - “COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA IN POP MUSIC FORM.” Not our words but those of The Guests, a band from Philadelphia who play powerful, melancholy, sweet music influenced by postpunk, synth-pop, goth and new wave, with a defiantly leftist lyrical outlook (they even have a song, ‘Beast Of Bolsover’, paying tribute to veteran Labour MP Dennis Skinner).
So far they’ve released two EPs, compiled onto one LP titled ‘Red Scare’ last year, and an album, 2018’s superb ‘Popular Music’. The five-piece line-up also features Kyle Seely and Hart Seely from SHEER MAG, and while The Guests’ music is quite different it displays the same melodic class and good politics. JEMMA ROPER - Legend of a hundred Cardiff stages, once of SAMMO HUNG and HECK and currently also in FINERY, appears here fronting a band who know their onions when it comes to sharp, death-fixated gothic postpunk. Luckily, that’s what Jemma Roper has got them playing! Debut album ‘The Thumping Heart Of Night’ came out last year, it’s a doozy, check it out here then check it out live - listen to Jemma Roper’s album on Bandcamp.
PRIVATE WORLD - Rad Cardiff ensemble who debuted at the start of last year and have made a deserved splash with their dreamy guitar/keyboard-heavy sound. You might hear elements of shoegaze, 80s 4AD type sounds, Roxy Music-esque shimmer and psychedelia, but it’s all tastily elusive. By the time this gig rolls around a cassette EP will be out on Burning Rose, an Australian label - visit the Private World page on Facebook.
